Day 3 - Proverbs 3:13-18 “Gaining Wisdom – the True Wealth”

My devotional thought today is on wisdom, specifically how to gain wisdom. Perhaps like me that was the question that crossed your mind after reading the chapter. We live in a world that pursues prestige, power, position and possession as the principal thing but God says, “Get wisdom”. That is the principal thing.

There are 2 things scripture teaches concerning gaining wisdom. Firstly, God is the source of all wisdom. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5 (NKJV)

Secondly, wisdom is inseparably linked to fearing God. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.” Psalms 111:10 (NKJV)

Therefore true wisdom comes only from God and it comes only to those who fear Him. During my recent visit to Perth, I had several opportunities to dine with Pastor Benny Ho, senior pastor of Faith community Church, Perth. At one particular meal, he asked “What is the fear of God?” He said that the fear of God is both a reverence of God and taking reference from God for all of life’s decisions and circumstances.

Would you take time today to consider what you are seeking to gain- wisdom or other things? Read through passages both in the New and Old Testament* about the fear of God. Remember when we gain wisdom we gain the true wealth reflected in Proverbs 3:13-18.
