Day 8 – Proverbs 8

Have you ever made a life and death decision before? It’s like the movie Aftershock where the mother had to make the heart wrenching decision between saving her daughter or her son who were both pinned under the opposite ends of a concrete slab. Pulling one out would result in the other being crushed…

That’s one kind of life and death decision I’d rather not make. But in Proverbs 8, we are called to make another kind of life and death decision…

Over here, we see how wisdom, like a virtuous woman, is seen crying in the streets offering services to all who will receive them :

  • Where she cries - in “high places”, at the gates and the doors (v1-3).
  • To whom she cries - to “the sons of men" (v4-5).
  • What she cries - that which is “excellent,” “right” and “the truth” (v6-9).
  • Why she cries - because what she has to offer is far more valuable than silver, gold or rubies (v10-11). She possesses discernment, prudence, counsel and so much more… (v12-21)

Wisdom fervently cries out in the hopes that men will choose to embrace her. In so doing, they choose life! V35 states “For whoever finds me find life, and obtains favour from God.”

She loudly implies that we can’t go wrong if we choose her. After all, she’s God’s delight and been there since time immemorial – “I have been established from everlasting…”.

However, to reject Wisdom is to choose death. V36 – “All those who hate me love death.” My friend, a fellow believer experienced a painful demise of his marriage when he rejected godly counsel and indulged in wild excesses… Another experienced the ‘loss’ of her son (not literally), as she rejected God’s principles in raising him...

The deal is simply this : Choose life – the greater life - by embracing wisdom. If you don’t, you are just courting death.

There’s no short cut to gaining wisdom. You need to gain it by walking closely with God. Read the word daily. Grow your prayer life. Surround yourself with godly counsel. Do life in community where you are encouraged and are accountable to grow in God. When you gain God, you gain wisdom.

So what’s your choice?
